Nearly €5 Million for New AI Infrastructure in Health and Prevention Research
The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is funding the development of a new computing infrastructure for health and prevention research. The three-year project will receive nearly €5 million in funding. It is one of three AI infrastructure projects supported by the Leibniz Association under the Global Minds Initiative Germany. Together, the three projects have a combined funding volume of approximately €14.9 million. The project is closely linked to the “Leibniz Health & Prevention” initiative, in which the LIT plays a leading role.

Under the name AGGCInf (AI AGent-native GPU Computing Infrastructure), the Leibniz Institute for Analytical Sciences (ISAS) in Dortmund is developing the technical foundation for an AI agent designed to support researchers in complex biomedical analyses. The agent is intended to independently process large datasets – for example from medical imaging or omics analysis – through multi-step workflows, link analytical results, and help researchers develop new scientific hypotheses.
A dialogue-based meta-agent will also enable researchers to formulate their questions in natural language, without having to program AI workflows themselves. Different levels of security will allow the system to be used with sensitive research data.
“Anyone seeking to develop and apply modern AI in research needs powerful and reliable infrastructures,” says Christoph M. Schmidt, President of the Leibniz Association. “With the funded projects, we are creating sustainable computing capacities that will enable distributed research data to be accessed and linked. At the same time, they will strengthen cooperation and help further advance the Leibniz Association’s international standing.”
The project is closely linked to the Leibniz initiative “Leibniz Health & Prevention” (LHP). The initiative brings together expertise from across the Leibniz Association in health research, prevention, and early detection. It supports the development of preventive, predictive, and precision approaches to the medicine of the future. Prof. Philipp Beckhove, Scientific Director of the LIT, is one of two LHP speakers.
