The Power of T Cells: Leibniz Magazine Visits the Leibniz Institute for Immunotherapy

They can destroy, slow down, and heal — and may yet reshape medicine in fundamental ways. At the Leibniz Institute for Immunotherapy (LIT) in Regensburg, researchers are working to better understand T cells and to harness them for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases. The latest issue of leibniz – the magazine of the Leibniz Association, published under the theme “Medicine”, takes up this research in a feature article that includes a guided tour of the institute.

In the piece, science journalist Christian Heinrich outlines how researchers in Regensburg are developing ways to reprogram T cells so they can target disease more precisely, while also exploring how these cells can be made more robust and controlled more effectively.

The article also highlights the close link between basic research and clinical application at the LIT. That connection is especially evident in approaches such as CAR T-cell therapy, as well as in newer strategies aimed at improving the persistence, safety, and therapeutic potential of T-cell-based treatments.

The issue is part of the 2026 Science Year and presents selected examples from Leibniz research in medicine. The Regensburg feature shows how ideas from the laboratory are already moving toward clinical use – while also pointing to how many questions remain open.
